Tartans of Dunedin

Royal Stewart TS 1370

The best known of all Scottish tartans, the Royal Stewart is the tartan of the Royal House of Stewart and the personal tartan of Her Majesty the Queen. In the same way that clansmen wear the tartan of their chief, it is appropriate for all subjects of the Queen to wear the Royal Stewart tartan. The pattern was first published by James Logan in his book, 'The Scottish Gael' in 1831, but references indicate that the sett was known at the end of the 18th century.

This tartan is proudly worn by the Dunedin Middle School Highlander Band since 1957.

Stewart Dress Clan Tartan  WR1765

James Grant took all of the seventy two tartans in his book, Tartans of the Clans of Scotland, published in 1886 by W.& A. K. Johnston, from actual specimens in use at the time.

Many are identical to those found in the earlier work of W. and A. Smith in 1850. The Victoria sett was known to have been favorably regarded by that great Queen. This tartan is also known as Royal Stewart Dress or simply Dress Stewart.

This tartan is proudly worn by the Dunedin High School Scottish Highlanders Band

Elliot Clan Tartan  WR596

The Elliot tartan was first recorded by H. Whyte in his book, 'The Tartans of the Clans and Septs of Scotland' (1906), along with many others in use at the time.  The coloring is unique among traditional tartans, being described as maroon and blue. The Elliot's are a 'Border Clan', founders of the Minto family.  The Chiefship once belonged to  the Elliot's of Redheugh but passed to the Elliot's of Stobs near Hawick in Roxburghshire.  The present Chief is Mrs. Margaret Elliot of that Ilk. The City Band and the Elliot Band wears the Tartan with the glad knowledge and kind permission of Mrs. Elliot. The City adopted the Elliot as the tartan of Dunedin in 1983 (Ordinance 83-58).

The source of tartan 596 was: W & A K Johnston, 1906.

This Tartan is proudly worn by the City Of Dunedin Band, and the affiliated Elliot Band.
